The report, issued by Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, also suggests measures such as implementing waiting periods for firearm purchases and closing loopholes that allow purchases without background checks. Task force members highlight the pressing need for comprehensive policy changes, marking firearms as the leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S. this year, with over 11,000 preventable injuries and deaths reported in Michigan alone.
