Michigan’s Red Flag Law Seizes Nearly 300 Guns in Year One

In its first year of implementation, Michigan’s Extreme Risk Protection Order Act has led to the confiscation of nearly 300 firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. Out of 391 red flag requests, judges approved 287, highlighting a significant uptake in the law’s utilization since its passage following the tragic Michigan State University shooting in February 2023.

The law enables family members and law enforcement to petition judges for gun removals, with most petitions filed ex parte, meaning without the subject present. Notably, the initial data reveal that about 11% of those served with orders faced criminal charges shortly after, underscoring the law’s potential role in mitigating immediate risks to public safety.
