This law permits police and certain medical professionals to petition for extreme risk protection orders, allowing firearms to be seized from individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others, following high-profile shootings that prompted legislative action.
In its first year of implementation, the law has been used to secure 321 emergency risk protection orders for firearm seizure, with 66% citing mental health issues. Notably, one incident involved an 8-year-old in the Upper Peninsula who made violent threats, underscoring the law’s unique provision allowing confiscation of unsecured firearms from parents if a child is named in an order.
