In response to a devastating school shooting in Minnesota that left two children dead and 21 injured, State Senator Zaynab Mohamed has introduced legislation to ban semi-automatic military-style assault weapons. Supported by Governor Tim Walz, the proposed ban seeks to curb the increasing incidents of mass shootings attributed to these firearms, drawing on historical data that shows a significant decline in such tragedies during the federal assault weapons ban from 1994 to 2004.
Supporters of the ban highlight the alarming trend of rising mass shooting fatalities in the years following the 2004 expiration of the federal law. For instance, a comprehensive study found that mass shooting deaths increased by 302% in the subsequent decade compared to the previous ten years under the ban. This context raises critical questions about the effectiveness of state-level bans given the porous nature of state lines regarding gun sales, especially in a region where neighboring states have fewer restrictions.
