Students across Minnesota participate in coordinated walkouts to advocate for gun control legislation, prompted by the recent shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church that resulted in two deaths and 21 injuries, primarily among children. High schoolers from the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists joined the protest, carrying signs such as “Am I next?” as they marched toward the state Capitol, where they held a moment of silence and called for action.
The walkouts, involving around 37 schools statewide, reflect a collective resolve among youth to demand bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Notably, the assailant in the Annunciation shooting used a legally acquired semiautomatic rifle, firing 116 rounds in under four minutes, highlighting the urgent need for legislative change. Governor Tim Walz has expressed intentions to convene a special session on gun policy, but significant opposition remains from Republican lawmakers focused more on school security measures.
