Missing Footage in Berkeley Police Shooting Investigation

Berkeley police recently released body camera footage from an incident that left a man critically injured on April 13, but the video lacks crucial moments due to a malfunction. The officer who discharged his weapon had inadvertently deactivated his body camera, resulting in no footage of the moment the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Ricardo Ruiz, threatened officers with a firearm before being shot.

The confrontation began when officers responded to a 911 call about a possible domestic disturbance and faced a standoff lasting about 25 minutes. Ruiz reportedly threatened to shoot and claimed he was a victim of a “swatting” prank, all while still pointing a weapon at officers when the shooting occurred. Following the altercation, Ruiz was arrested and faces multiple felony charges, raising questions about police response protocols in similar high-stakes situations.
