Mississippi Men Fined $120K for Deer Poaching in Illinois

Five men from Mississippi have been sentenced in a federal court in southern Illinois, ordered to pay nearly $120,000 for illegally hunting white-tailed deer using spotlights. The group, which operated between 2018 and 2022 across multiple counties, admitted to a calculated scheme that exploited Illinois’s wildlife, leading to severe legal consequences under the Lacey Act.

Among the sentences, Lee J. Johnson received five years of probation and was fined $85,000—a reflection of the seriousness of the violations and their impact on local ecosystems. Authorities involved in the case emphasized the importance of wildlife laws, which not only aim to protect species but also promote ethical hunting practices across the nation. This case underscores the challenges faced by conservationists in maintaining wildlife integrity amid organized poaching efforts.
