Mississippi Taxidermists Offer Free CWD Testing for Deer

In an effort to combat chronic wasting disease (CWD) among deer, taxidermists across Mississippi are partnering with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to offer free testing for hunters during the 2025-26 season. This initiative allows hunters to submit tissue samples from their kills, helping to track and potentially slow the spread of this fatal neurodegenerative disease that has affected 446 deer in the state since its detection in 2018.

While the testing is voluntary for most of the hunting season, it is highly encouraged by health officials as a precaution against consuming tainted meat, despite no documented cases of CWD transmission to humans. The CDC strongly advises hunters to know the status of their deer, underlining the importance of such testing in safeguarding public health as well as wildlife populations. Participating taxidermists are spread throughout the state, offering an accessible solution for conscientious hunters.
