Missouri Hunter Faces Penalties for Shooting Mountain Lion

A Missouri deer hunter has pleaded guilty to illegally shooting a mountain lion that had traveled nearly 800 miles from Nebraska to Iron County. This incident occurred during the 2024-25 deer hunting season, resulting in the hunter losing his rifle, a fine of $2,000, and revocation of his hunting privileges for a year. The mountain lion, equipped with double ear tags as part of a research study, was shot while the hunter was in a treestand.

In court, evidence indicated that the hunting act was impulsive and unjustified, having no legal basis under Missouri law, which protects mountain lions unless in self-defense. The mountain lion was previously tracked since kittenhood in Nebraska, only to end its long journey upon being illegally killed. The case highlights ongoing concerns about hunting regulations and the importance of wildlife conservation in the region.
