Mobile Man Receives 51-Month Sentence for Gun Offense

A Mobile man, Nijel Malik Smith, is sentenced to 51 months in prison for illegally possessing a machine gun, a verdict stemming from a traffic stop where police discovered a fully-loaded Glock .45 caliber pistol equipped with an illegal conversion device. Court documents reveal that the weapon, which had been reported stolen, possessed a “Glock switch” allowing it to fire automatically, escalating the severity of the offense.

This case is not Smith’s first run-in with the law; he was previously arrested merely months before his sentencing for possessing drugs and another firearm while still under federal supervision. The judge has additionally mandated a three-year supervised release following Smith’s prison term, during which he will undergo drug testing and treatment, emphasizing the ongoing concerns regarding violent crime and illegal firearms usage in the region.
