Most Common Guns Used in US Crimes Revealed

New data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) reveals that pistols account for nearly 75% of all firearms traced to crimes in the United States in 2023. This trend parallels the increasing popularity of pistols, particularly those chambered for 9mm ammunition, which alone comprised over 230,000 traced firearms, making it the most common caliber linked to crime by a significant margin.

Gun sales have surged in recent years, contributing to a 44% increase in gun-related fatalities from 2014 to 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While every type of firearm can be misused, this analysis highlights how specific calibers are more frequently associated with crime, prompting discussions about their impact on gun violence and public safety.
