Four defendants from New Jersey involved in the January 6 Capitol riot are attempting to leverage former President Donald Trump’s promises of pardons as they navigate their legal battles. Christian Alfonso, who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the riot, is among those seeking to postpone his sentencing based on Trump’s public statements regarding pardoning participants in the Capitol attack.
Judges overseeing these cases, however, have largely rejected arguments that Trump’s potential actions justify delaying proceedings. In one instance, a judge dismissed the claim as speculative, reinforcing the courts’ commitment to their independent legal responsibilities. As of January 6, 2025, over 1,580 individuals have faced federal charges related to the riot, illustrating the ongoing complexities of these cases as defendants hope to influence outcomes with political assertions.
