N.J. Sues Trump Over Crime Victim Aid Conditions

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announces a multi-state lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s controversial use of crime victim aid to advance its immigration agenda. This legal action involves 21 states and targets $1 billion in Victims of Crime Act funding that the administration has connected to state compliance with federal immigration enforcement, creating allegations of political manipulation that jeopardizes essential services for millions of crime victims.

The lawsuit asserts that such conditions violate federal law and threaten the well-being of individuals affected by serious crimes, including domestic violence and sexual assault. Platkin stresses the lawsuit’s aim is to safeguard vital assistance for nearly 9 million crime victims each year, declaring, “Playing politics with the lives of people who have suffered so greatly is reckless.” The coalition seeks a permanent injunction to prevent these new federal restrictions from being enforced.
