Authorities have released the names of the suspect and the officer involved in a deadly standoff in West St. Paul, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation. The suspect, 42-year-old Jerry Va Thao, was shot after he barricaded himself inside a home and fired at SWAT team members during a tense seven-hour standoff on Ottawa Avenue.
Police attempts to negotiate Thao’s surrender were unsuccessful, leading to the use of chemical irritants. Officer Sean Marben, with eight years of experience, shot Thao after seeing him at the bottom of a basement staircase. Marben is currently on paid administrative leave as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continues to investigate the incident, which will be forwarded to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office upon completion.
