Navy Sailor Shoots Down Drone with .50 Caliber Gun

A US Navy sailor recently illustrated the increasing role of drones in naval warfare by successfully shooting down a small drone using a .50 caliber machine gun during NATO’s largest live-fire exercise, Formidable Shield 25. Petty Officer Second Class Brian Diaz, aboard the USS Thomas Hudner, described the moment he received authorization to engage the drone, firing multiple rounds that concluded with a direct hit, much to the excitement of his crewmates.

This encounter reflects broader military trends as the Navy strengthens its counter-drone capabilities amid lessons learned from recent conflicts, such as those in the Red Sea. While Diaz’s target was part of a training exercise, the incident underscores the operational realities warships may face against real aerial threats, prompting a reevaluation of tactics and technologies to protect naval forces in future engagements.
