A moving 21-gun salute recently honors Kenneth Gorbey, a U.S. Navy veteran, at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park in Amherst. Gorbey, who served from 1957 to 1963, passed away on January 10 from a heart attack, a date that also coincided with his son’s birthday, intensifying the family’s loss.
Attended by a supportive community, the tribute features the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard performing the salute and playing “Taps.” Gorbey’s daughter, Suzette Latin, shares her family’s rich military history, noting her father’s and brothers’ service. With the presence of her son, a current Navy service member, the heartfelt ceremony symbolizes not only remembrance but also a legacy of dedication to the armed forces.
