ND Governor Signs Bill on Deer Baiting Regulations

North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has signed Senate Bill 2137, a new law that prohibits the state’s Game and Fish Department from banning the use of bait for deer hunting on private properties. The bill arises from ongoing concerns over chronic wasting disease in deer populations, which the agency previously attempted to combat through baiting restrictions that affected some hunting areas.

Supporters, including many hunters, argue that the law respects private property rights while managing wildlife, as Armstrong noted in his statement. However, the legislation has drawn criticism from wildlife experts who fear it may hinder efforts to control diseases among the deer population. Other recently signed measures include increased costs for hunting licenses and new fees aimed at enhancing waterfowl habitats.
