New Bill Aims to Increase Assault Weapons Purchase Age

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand recently introduced legislation to raise the minimum age for purchasing assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines from 18 to 21. This proposal comes in light of alarming statistics reflecting that individuals under 21 have been involved in significant shootings in the U.S., including the tragic mass shooting in Buffalo in 2022, where 10 lives were lost.

The Age 21 Act aims to restrict access to dangerous firearms for younger individuals, who are responsible for a disproportionately high number of mass shooting incidents. Senator Gillibrand emphasizes that over 85 percent of fatalities in public mass shootings involving multiple victims are linked to assault rifles, highlighting the urgent need for reform. The proposed law would apply to both federally licensed and private sellers, creating critical safeguards to protect communities and reduce gun violence among youth.
