New Bill Eases Concealed Carry for Off-Duty Officers

Republican Senator Jay Collins introduces a bill that would enable off-duty law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and military service members to carry concealed weapons without fear of penalties. The proposed legislation (SB 490) clarifies that these individuals are considered licensed to carry, provided they possess valid employer-issued identification, even when not on duty.

This measure addresses a growing concern about the ability of officers to respond to public safety issues while off the clock, eliminating various fees and legal repercussions associated with improper concealed carry. Companion legislation (HB 383) has been filed by Representative Jeff Holcomb, and both bills await committee referral before potentially taking effect on July 1 if signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis.
