New Changes to Maine’s Deer Hunting License System

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife has announced significant changes to its deer hunting licensing system for the 2025 season, allowing hunters in specific Wildlife Management Districts (WMDs 21-25 and 29) to harvest either a buck or a doe using their hunting license. This adjustment aims to simplify the process and encourage more hunters to participate, following previous challenges in meeting population goals for doe harvesting.

In recent years, fewer hunters utilized the antlerless permit system, leading to lower doe harvest numbers. The department’s goal for the current year is 15,720 doe, a target still not met last year, but it hopes this streamlined method will entice hunters and contribute to beneficial deer management in densely populated areas. With the potential for increased doe takes, hunters could not only assist in population control but also ensure they have meat for their families throughout the year.
