New Safety Rules for Late-Night Bars in Seattle

Seattle Councilmember Bob Kettle has proposed a new ordinance aimed at enhancing safety at bars operating after 2 a.m., following a troubling rise in gun violence linked to late-night establishments. This legislation, which includes mandates for security personnel, video surveillance, and comprehensive safety plans, reflects a concerted effort to protect patrons and the surrounding community from escalating violence.

Among the legislative measures, bars will be required to maintain current city permits and allow police access to their premises. With notable incidents such as the 2023 shooting that left three dead and six injured, the urgency for these proposals is clear. Enforcement will be managed by the Finance and Administrative Services Department, with fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for non-compliance. The Council is scheduled to vote on the bill as early as April 8, marking a significant step towards ensuring nightlife safety in Seattle.
