NH Lawmaker Proposes Gun Safety Education for Students

A Republican lawmaker in New Hampshire, Rep. Terry Roy, proposes legislation requiring public school students to undergo one hour of gun safety education each year, starting in kindergarten. Roy’s initiative aims to counteract the glamorization of firearms portrayed in media, citing concerns over youth exposure to violent video games and the societal normalization of guns.

This proposed curriculum would teach younger students to avoid guns while older ones would address the dangers of mishandling weapons. Although there would be no firearms present during lessons, and parents could opt their children out, critics such as Gabrielle Goldstein argue that gun safety training may perpetuate the acceptance of guns in school settings rather than addressing the root causes of gun violence. The House committee could vote on the bill soon, raising important questions about the future of gun education in schools.
