An off-duty North Charleston police officer will not be criminally charged following a shooting incident at a Walmart in July, where he fired at a man who drew a firearm during a confrontation. The incident happened on July 14 as Officer Michael Lewis was called to investigate a potential fraud when the suspect, identified as 47-year-old David Juan Bryant, attempted to flee the store and threatened the officer with a gun.
According to the 9th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, the surveillance footage shows Bryant pointing his weapon at Lewis, leading the officer to reasonably fear for his life. Prosecutors noted that based on the evidence presented, including Bryant’s criminal background, Lewis acted in self-defense and believed there was a public safety threat. Bryant was later charged with multiple offenses but remains in custody due to his past convictions.
