The National Rifle Association (NRA) has filed a Petition for Certiorari with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of NRA v. Glass, aiming to overturn Florida’s prohibition on firearm purchases by adults aged 18 to 20. This ban, established in 2018, makes it illegal for young adults to buy firearms, imposing penalties that include up to five years in prison for violations, an assertion the NRA contends violates the Second Amendment rights of these individuals.
John Commerford, Executive Director of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action, emphasizes that individuals aged 18 and older are recognized as adults in many aspects of life, including voting and military service, and should have the same right to defend themselves. The NRA’s petition highlights a contentious split among federal circuit courts regarding the constitutional rights of young adults, citing that other circuits have recognized these rights, while Florida’s law remains upheld by the Eleventh Circuit.
