The National Rifle Association (NRA) has partnered with an El Paso County resident and several gun rights organizations to file a lawsuit against Colorado’s newly implemented 6.5% excise tax on guns and ammunition. The tax, which was approved by voters in November as Proposition KK, aims to raise an estimated $39 million annually to support crime victim services, mental health initiatives, and school safety programs.
The lawsuit was filed in Denver District Court, claiming the tax infringes on Second Amendment rights by imposing an unfair burden on law-abiding citizens and retailers. NRA Executive Director John Commerford described the tax as “an overt assault” on the rights of Colorado gun owners, emphasizing the group’s commitment to defending their constitutional freedoms.
