The NYPD has released body-cam footage documenting the fatal police shooting of 28-year-old Royston Bacchus, who was shot after allegedly refusing to drop his firearm during a confrontation in East Flatbush. The incident unfolded on October 5, when officers responded to a 911 call regarding a violation of an order of protection, leading to a chase after Bacchus, who matched the suspect’s description. In the video, Lt. Richard Custodio commands Bacchus to drop his weapon ten times, as Bacchus appears to point the gun toward the officer before a single shot is fired.
After being struck in the chest, Bacchus was provided immediate aid by officers and transported to Kings County Hospital, where he later died. Witness accounts describe the tense moments leading up to the shooting, with one bystander noting the rapid succession of commands before the gunfire erupted. The ongoing investigation is drawing attention to the circumstances surrounding the police response, raising questions from the community about the incident and Bacchus’s father’s poignant statement at a vigil, “To my son, you will not be forgotten.”
