NYPD Remembers Detectives Killed in 2003 Undercover Operation

This week marks the 22nd anniversary of the deaths of NYPD Detectives James Nemorin and Rodney Andrews, who were killed during an undercover gun buy on Staten Island on March 10, 2003. The two detectives were ambushed by 19-year-old Ronell Wilson, who opened fire on them with a .44-caliber revolver after they attempted to purchase a TEC-9 semi-automatic pistol, leaving them fatally wounded.

The NYPD continues to honor their sacrifice, highlighting their bravery in confronting the dangers of illegal gun trafficking. Wilson’s subsequent capture and conviction, alongside the response from eyewitnesses like Candice Negron, who recognized him on a ferry, underscores the tragic yet impactful circumstances surrounding the case. The NYPD stated, “Their heroic efforts were instrumental in saving countless lives,” emphasizing the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement officers each day.
