The Oakland Police Department (OPD) purchased three brands of military-grade assault rifles without the required approval from the police commission or city council, as mandated by state law. Activists discovered that these purchases, including Seekins, Daniel Defense, and Mega Arms rifles, were unapproved and not reported in city records dating back to 2022.
As OPD seeks approval for an additional 75 assault rifles and other military equipment despite a reported decline in violent crime, community members express concern over transparency and the potential impact on public safety. The findings challenge OPD’s credibility and raise important questions about the oversight of police use of military equipment in Oakland.
