Officer Faces Jury for Fatal Puppy Shooting in New Orleans

A New Orleans police officer, Derrick Burmaster, is set to face a jury trial after fatally shooting an 18-week-old puppy named Apollo while responding to a domestic disturbance call in April 2021. Internal investigations indicated that the shooting violated departmental policies, as multiple reviews concluded Apollo did not pose a threat when he approached Burmaster as he entered the yard.

The lawsuit, filed by the puppy’s owners, seeks damages for emotional distress caused by the incident, with claims that their constitutional rights were violated. Despite findings that Burmaster’s actions were unjustified, he was later exonerated by department leadership, raising questions about accountability in a police department under federal oversight for past misconduct. This trial will be closely watched as it highlights ongoing issues within law enforcement use of force practices.
