A Detroit police officer faces possible criminal charges after shooting a woman six times during a traffic stop on October 26. According to Police Chief Todd Bettison, the incident unfolded when the officer initiated the stop for speeding and other violations, yet the situation escalated dramatically when the officer failed to summon a supervisor as the woman requested. Instead, after using pepper spray and entering a pursuit when she drove away, the officer fired multiple shots at the woman’s vehicle as police boxed her in.
Chief Bettison highlighted significant policy violations by the officers involved, emphasizing that police should only pursue vehicles in cases involving violent crimes. Despite the gravity of the situation, the woman, who has since been released from the hospital, will not face charges. The Michigan State Police are now investigating the incident, and the department is recommending the officer be suspended without pay while accountability measures are pursued.
