Aujawan Hymon, a 20-year-old from Savannah, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal possession of a machinegun in connection with the July shooting at Oglethorpe Mall. Hymon is one of six suspects implicated in the incident and was reportedly caught with a firearm equipped with an extended magazine and a machinegun conversion device during the altercation.
United States Attorney Margaret E. Heap emphasizes the seriousness of such offenses, stating efforts will be intensified to combat the rising gun violence fueled by these illegal devices. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is actively investigating the case alongside the Savannah Police Department, highlighting the alarming trend of routine firearms being transformed into more lethal weapons.
