Ohio Bill Seeks Gun Ban Linked to Domestic Violence Misdemeanors

Ohio Senators Hearcel Craig and Casey Weinstein introduce Senate Bill 98, which aims to prevent individuals with first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence convictions from owning firearms. This legislative move aligns state laws with federal regulations that already restrict gun ownership for many domestic violence offenders and seeks to establish a clearer enforcement framework for public safety.

The bill’s introduction comes in response to troubling statistics highlighting the role of firearms in domestic violence deaths; 84% of the 157 fatalities in the past year involved guns. By expanding the gun ban to include misdemeanor offenders, Ohio could join 32 other states with similar restrictions, addressing both the safety of victims and the increasing risks faced by law enforcement. The bill is currently under consideration as testimonies from various stakeholders are awaited.
