Ohio Proposes Bill to Limit Gun Access for Offenders

Two Ohio state senators, Hearcel Craig and Casey Weinstein, introduce Senate Bill 98 to prevent individuals convicted of first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence offenses from owning firearms. This initiative highlights the urgent need for legislative action, given that last year, 157 Ohio residents died from domestic violence, with 84% of these fatalities involving firearms.

The bill aims to enhance public safety by aligning Ohio law with federal standards, which already restrict gun ownership for most misdemeanor domestic abusers. With domestic violence incidents being among the most dangerous for law enforcement, the proposed legislation is positioned as a vital step to reduce the risks faced by victims and responders alike, as noted by Sen. Craig during the bill’s first hearing.
