The number of Ohio schools that permit staff to carry firearms is on the rise, with 97 districts registering with the Ohio School Safety Center since 2022. This increase reflects heightened concerns over safety following tragic incidents, such as the recent shooting at a Minnesota Catholic school, which claimed the lives of two children. However, the figures reveal that the vast majority of Ohio’s more than 600 public school districts and 700 chartered private schools have not opted to arm their staff.
Most of the schools that are registered do not arm teachers; rather, they allow security personnel to carry weapons. For example, Fairborn City Schools has an armed security supervisor, while Miami Valley Career Technology Center confirms that teachers are not permitted to carry firearms. The decision to allow staff to carry guns stems from legislation enacted after the Uvalde school shooting, which mandates 24 hours of training for teachers who wish to carry on campus—a safety measure some districts have embraced while others remain cautious. With just six registered schools in Montgomery County and none in Clark and Miami Counties, the trend continues to spark debate on school safety practices across the state.
