Open Carry Now Permitted at University of Utah

The University of Utah has announced that, effective July 21, it will implement new firearm guidelines that permit open carry on campus in accordance with House Bill 128. This law allows individuals over 18 with a valid Utah concealed weapon permit to carry firearms openly, reversing prior restrictions that required weapons to be concealed.

University Police confirm that compliance will be closely monitored, ensuring that only those with appropriate credentials carry firearms on campus. Captain Jason Hinojosa emphasized the importance of understanding and following the regulations, noting that while firearms are now permissible in many campus areas, there are specific restrictions, including bans in hearing rooms and mental health facilities. This shift raises safety and policy discussions within the campus community, particularly as new students are oriented to these regulations this summer.
