Pennsylvania lawmakers are advocating for the implementation of Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPO), designed to temporarily restrict gun access for individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others. This initiative, led by Rep. Jennifer O’Mara, seeks to address the alarming statistic that over 55% of the 1,941 firearm-related fatalities in the state in 2022 were suicides. O’Mara shares a personal connection to this issue, having lost her father to suicide with a gun, which fuels her commitment to prevent similar tragedies.
The proposed ERPO would allow family members or law enforcement to petition a court to remove firearms from individuals in crisis situations. With 21 states already enacting similar laws, early studies indicate that such measures can help reduce suicide rates and prevent potential mass violence. This legislative push comes at a critical time, as Pennsylvania experiences rising gun suicide attempts that have a staggering 90-95% fatality rate, emphasizing the urgent need for effective interventions.
