Parents Support Under-16 Social Media Ban, Kids Disagree

A recent survey conducted by the Family Online Safety Institute shows that 65% of Australian parents and 58% of U.S. parents support the implementation of a social media ban for children under 16. However, the survey of 4,000 parents and children indicates that only 38% of Australian children and 36% of U.S. children agree, raising concerns about losing vital online connections and support systems that many rely on.

This generational divide is reflected in children’s fears; 53% of U.S. children and 56% of Australian children worry that such a ban would sever essential friendships. While many parents believe the ban could help safeguard mental health, only a minority of children share this view, highlighting the complex emotional implications of restricting access to platforms that support youth engagement and community.
