Penn researchers are reimagining violence prevention by emphasizing community engagement and support for youth, particularly in response to a tragic shooting in Grays Ferry. Following the July 7 block party incident that killed three and injured ten, Sara Solomon from the Penn Injury Science Center advocates for “spreading kindness and love” as vital strategies in reducing gun violence.
The upcoming fall initiative, funded by the Department of Justice, will target middle school students to connect them with resources earlier. Solomon and her team focus on identifying high-risk individuals and providing necessary support, such as job placement and therapy, likening gun violence prevention to treating a contagious disease. Their efforts highlight the profound need for trust and collaboration between academic institutions and historically underserved communities.
