A Pennsylvania woman, Bonita Shreve, has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Postal Service and other federal entities, arguing that a nearly 100-year-old law prohibiting the mailing of handguns infringes on Second Amendment rights. The case, filed in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh, centers on Shreve’s desire to mail a handgun as a gift to her father, an action made nearly impossible due to the ban and restrictions by private carriers like UPS and FedEx.
Joining Shreve in this legal challenge are the national organizations Gun Owners of America, Inc., and Gun Owners Foundation, both asserting that the longstanding law is an anachronism that does not reflect contemporary understandings of gun rights. They argue that the law contravenes historical precedents set by the U.S. Supreme Court, which has indicated that mailing firearms was permissible when the Second Amendment was adopted. The plaintiffs aim for a court ruling that would deem the law unconstitutional and prevent its enforcement.
