In a significant development for gun safety legislation, Petaluma police have made the city’s first-ever arrest for improper gun storage after discovering an unsecured shotgun during a routine probation search. The search, conducted on March 1, uncovered the firearm in a closet accessible to minors, violating the city’s firearm storage ordinance implemented in December 2022.
The ordinance mandates that guns must be stored in locked containers or secured with a locking device, with the aim of preventing accidental shootings and increasing accountability among gun owners. The arrest of 50-year-old Peter Dada, who is cited to appear in court, sets a precedent in Petaluma, where residents are encouraged to utilize free gun locks offered by the police department to enhance safety measures.
