Philadelphia gun shops are now required to post signs warning customers against “straw purchases,” where individuals buy firearms for those prohibited from owning them. This new ordinance, signed by Mayor Cherelle Parker, aims to educate buyers about the legal consequences of such purchases, which can lead to up to 10 years in prison and hefty fines.
The city’s initiative responds to concerns that many offenders—primarily young women—claim ignorance of the law while procuring firearms for others. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel notes that awareness is critical, as eight out of ten straw purchases are made by women. With this step, Philadelphia seeks to reinforce legal knowledge while addressing the linkage between straw purchasing and gun violence in the community.
