Retired law enforcement leaders in Phoenix advocate for expanding crisis intervention teams (CITs) to mitigate the rising rates of police-involved shootings, particularly those linked to mental health crises. With six such shootings occurring this year—five of which resulted in fatalities—retired Police Commander Dr. Jeff Hynes stresses the urgent need for pairing officers with CIT members during calls involving mental health issues.
Hynes points out that the Phoenix Police Department currently operates only two CIT squads, a far cry from the six to ten he believes are necessary. He argues that enhancing CIT availability can provide officers with better tools to de-escalate situations and ultimately save lives. As the city reviews its approach to mental health crises, the community awaits further response from local officials on potential expansion plans for these vital teams.
