Pima County Gun Reporting Ordinance Overturned

A federal court has struck down a Pima County ordinance requiring gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms within 48 hours, a rule aiming to curb straw purchases. This decision arises from challenges claiming the ordinance violates an Arizona law that limits local governments from enacting their own firearms regulations.

The ordinance imposed a hefty fine of $1,000 for non-compliance, prompting a lawsuit from the Goldwater Institute, which argues that firearm regulation should occur at the state level. Following the ruling, Pima County attorney Laura Conover announced that the county is weighing its options for next steps in response to the federal court’s decision.
