Police Resell Unsafe Guns to Civilians Amid Controversy

Multiple police departments are reselling SIG Sauer P320 pistols, which have been involved in controversy over alleged safety defects, including reports of unintentional discharges. Milwaukee’s police chief recently announced the department would trade in its P320s—deemed too hazardous for officer use—to offset costs for new firearms, effectively putting these questionable weapons back onto the civilian market.

This unsettling trend raises serious ethical questions about public safety, as over 20 law enforcement agencies have prohibited the P320 model due to fears of accidental firings. Investigations reveal that at least 120 people have claimed their P320s fired without pulling the trigger, resulting in over 110 injuries and one death, further complicating the decision to sell these guns while trying to safeguard both officers and the public.
