Portsmouth Man Gets 15 Years for Drug and Gun Crimes

A Portsmouth man, Steven Frederick James, is sentenced to 15 years in federal prison after being convicted of drug trafficking and possessing a firearm in connection with his criminal activities. Authorities uncovered that the 51-year-old felon was using three homes across the Hampton Roads area to distribute narcotics, including a kilogram of cocaine and methamphetamine.

During a March 2024 search of his residences and vehicle, law enforcement seized loaded handguns, digital scales, and over $5,000 in cash, highlighting the scale of his operation. Prosecutors noted James’s extensive criminal history, which includes previous convictions for drug-related offenses and firearm possession, raising concerns about recidivism in cases involving violent crime and substance abuse.
