This alarming statistic reflects a troubling trend, as homicide ranks as the leading cause of death for pregnant women, with over two-thirds of these cases involving a firearm.
Researchers evaluated more than 7,000 homicides from 2018 to 2021 and linked increased state-level firearm ownership to higher homicide rates among pregnant women. With findings suggesting that systemic issues such as structural racism disproportionately affect Black women, experts advocate for stronger gun control measures and policies aimed at reducing domestic violence to combat this preventable crisis.
