Governor JB Pritzker signs two new gun control laws designed to combat the persistent gun violence in Illinois, reducing the reporting time for lost firearms from 72 to 48 hours. The new laws also require law enforcement agencies statewide to adopt a federal gun tracing system, aimed at holding accountable not only those who fire weapons but also those who illegally traffic them.
During the announcement, Pritzker emphasized the need for proactive measures, stating, “I’m tired of forcing our children to duck and cover because too many politicians are ducking and covering for the gun industry’s money.” With Chicago experiencing a decrease in gun-related homicides—45% lower compared to the same period last year—these laws are part of a broader strategy to ensure safety and accountability in the state’s approach to gun ownership.
