Record Gun Background Checks in January 2021

The FBI reveals it conducted more than 4.3 million gun background checks in January 2021, the highest monthly count in its history, reflecting a significant surge in firearm purchases. This figure, supported by data from Small Arms Analytics and Forecasting, indicates a 79% increase in gun sales compared to January 2020, driven by public anticipation of potential gun control measures from the Biden administration.

Three weeks in January ranked among the top 10 highest for background checks, with January 15th marking a particularly high day with over 183,000 checks. Experts like Jurgen Brauer note that while background checks are strong indicators of sales trends, they do not directly equate to the number of firearms sold due to multiple purchases often requiring only one check. As Americans continue to assert their Second Amendment rights, the demand for guns shows no signs of abating.
