Rep. Massie Reintroduces Bill to Repeal Gun-Free Zones

Rep. Thomas Massie (R–Ky.) has reintroduced a bill aimed at repealing the 1990 Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA), arguing that it hinders the ability of students and teachers to defend against potential violent intruders. The GFSZA currently makes it a felony to possess a firearm within 1,000 feet of school property, a law that has faced constitutional scrutiny regarding its connection to interstate commerce, as highlighted by the Supreme Court in 1995.

Alongside its Commerce Clause challenges, the GFSZA raises significant Second Amendment questions, particularly regarding its broad restrictions on firearm possession. For instance, the situation of Gabriel Metcalf, who was convicted for carrying a firearm on public property adjacent to a school, illustrates the contentious nature of this legislation. As 29 states allow permitless gun carry, these discrepancies compel a reevaluation of the law’s implications on individual rights and safety in school zones.
