Rhode Island Hunters Choose Wild Turkey for Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving approaches, some Rhode Island hunters are opting for wild turkey instead of traditional store-bought birds, celebrating a unique culinary experience. With wild turkey populations thriving in the state, hunters like Elizabeth Bonczek and Jesse St. Andre highlight the distinct flavor and personal satisfaction that comes from harvesting their own turkey, with Bonczek declaring, “It was really good” after preparing a wild bird for the holiday in 2023.

While the Rhode Island wild turkey population faced near extinction in the early 1800s, conservation efforts have helped them rebound significantly, making them commonly seen today. However, the timing of hunting seasons means that many families still gravitate towards supermarket options, even as hunters praise wild turkey for its rich taste and leaner meat, which they describe as preferable compared to commercial varieties.
